The answer comes from an old Norse superstition about gifting knives being bad luck.
Apparently the exchange of a blade can represent a cutting of the friendship. So now gift givers and receivers exchange coins as a means of rebuilding the friendship.

If cared for properly, your new Katto knife will last for several lifetimes. And the good news is that doing this couldn't be easier.
Simply hand wash it using warm water and dish soap, dry immediately and store in the scabbard provided.
You can easily sharpen the knife at home using a whetstone, or knife sharpener (aim for as close to 12 degrees as possible).
